The Advocacy in Action: Health Parities Program was developed in response to the challenges facing African Americans in California in the area of health disparities and access to resources for community-based organizations. The AIA program focused on providing leadership and advocacy training to the AIA fellows. The fellows were selected to participate based on their service to their communities and their desire to learn how to effectively advocate and network on behalf of their client populations. The AIA program provided training to 21 fellows from agencies throughout Los Angeles County. The community based programs included those whose sole focus is meeting the health needs of their clients to programs that provide an array of services ranging from mental health services, foster care/transition services, youth services, to housing and re-entry services. This combination of agencies provided the program with a variety of perspectives on the issues of health disparities as well as a variety of strategies and interventions needed to meet the needs of the community-based organizations.
Advocacy in Action Part II will focus on operationalizing the skill set and collaborative relationships that were established during Part I training. The fellows will plan and implement an advocacy event that will provide them with upfront and personal interaction with area local, state and national legislators , that will set the foundation for future partnerships in the best interest of their communities.
